Jan 2011: Happy New Year VGA-Atlanta golfers!
Welcome back to our VGA-Atlanta website! I am very excited about the upcoming golf season. We have many tournaments and outings planned for 2011. I want to congratulate Thai Nguyen for winning the VGA 2010 Gross Trophy and Oanh Truong for winning the VGA 2010 Net Trophy. While Oanh is taking a “Winter” break, Thai is still going strong this offseason shooting in the mid 70s. There is no doubt that he has a big target on his back this year!
Thanks to those who participated in the hole-in-one charity event in 2010, we were able to donate $1000.00 to the One Body Village Charity. We hope to raise the contribution amount in 2011 however. 2010 ended with a “BANG” at our Christmas party. We had more than 30 families participate and the kids got a surprise visit from Santa. We will continue to have monthly outings starting in March along with other different challenges. Last year we had the Father’s Day “ChaCon” challenge, VGA Atlanta Ryder Cup, Vietnam vs Laos Cup, 16-man match play, 2-man best ball, and 2-man scrabble. We hope to add a VGA-Atlanta vs VGA-Gulf Coast challenge this year. Monthly outings will held at Northwood Country Club.
I also happy to announce our first VGA-Atlanta match play starting Saturday 1/29. Matches will continue every Saturday (weather permitting) until we have a champion! I look forwarding to another fun year of golf and the camaraderie from VGA-Atlanta golfers as well as other visiting golfers.
1st place = trophy and $200
2nd place = trophy and $120
3rd place = trophy and $80
2010 Posting: First of all, the VGA 2010 end-of-the-year Championship Tournament is Saturday November 6th at Northwood Country Club. Tee time at 12:30. Space is limited, so please sign up early.
Secondly, congratulations to Tom Quoc Le for winning the staple format in September. Quoc went from a 20 handicap at the beginning of the year to a 16 handicap (most improved player). I guess joining 2 different country clubs helped Quoc!
Thirdly, congratultions to Captain Thai Nguyen and team members for winning the VGA 2010 Ryder Cup. Team members are Bruce Huynh, Duc Hoang, Duke Nguyen, Anh Long, Jimmy Nguyen, Kevin Nguyen, Steve Tran, Tom Quoc Le and Tung Ngo. Thai’s team won 6 out the 10 possible points. It was a close match, and we can’t wait for it again next year! I think we agree however that all were winners when we were treated to a sushi fest at Thai’s house! Makes me hungry looking at the picture!
Please notice the schedule change for September and October. We are moving up a week to avoid cold weather as we get closer to Winter.

As suggested by some members, we added a "gross" score trophy to help prepare for VGA National next year. Speaking of gross score, I want to congrats August gross winner - Steve Tran. Also want to congrats Linh Truong for top "net". Thanks to everyone for coming and we will see you again next month.

Our mid-year championship was very successful and thanks to everyone for participating! The winning scores were very close, and we had different winners in each category (top net, closest to the pin and long drive). Like many new organizations, VGA is taking small steps to create a fun, competitive golf network for Vietnamese in Atlanta. We also like to thank those who have sent in your suggestions online. As a group, VGA will continue to improve future outings. Thanks and see you next month!

Two major changes came out from our trophy ceremony dinner!
1. Winner must be present to receive the trophy. This includes monthly outings.
2. As a group, we have selected/voted on each other's handicap. VGA will use this handicap until we have enough actual scores to establish the “USGA” handicap index. These handicaps will be posted prior to our next outing.

Mid-year VGA Championship Tournament and Trophy Ceremony Dinner on Saturday June 26!
The tournament will consist of two flights based on handicap rank (rank TBD by Handicap Committee). Trophies include first and second place for each flight. We will have a long drive award for each flight. There will also be a "closest to the pin" contest for all 5 par 3s. First Tee time is 10am. Please plan to check-in at 9am.

Congrats team "Daddy-O" for winning 2010 Fathers/non-Fathers VGA annual challenge! Final score was 6-2 and the MVP goes to Thai Nguyen for winning his match 6/5.
Our next VGA 2010 challenge is July 17th! This is a 40 and over challenge (Young Guns versus Old Schools). More to come!
